    My New Normal

‘I am in my mid-thirties and spend long hours sitting at a computer.  I have had chronic neck and back pain for several years in concurrence with daily headaches, which became my normal.  I tried Southern Bliss Yoga in search for a new normal ‘pain relief’, that hindered every aspect of my life.  I decided to begin with private sessions with my trainer Melissa McIntosh in order have someone focus on my particular health goals, but I did not anticipate instantaneous results and the genuine attentiveness.  To my amazement, after just one class I was pain free and given the knowledge and support to incorporate yoga practice into my daily life.  In result, I have not had back pain or headaches, which has brought renewed clarity, energy, and enthusiasm.  I am so grateful to Melissa and the Southern Bliss Yoga Studio for the gift of health, my new normal.’

8 years ago when I was a travel nurse in Tucson, a good friend of mine had been begging me to go with her to a yoga studio. I told her I hiked, went to Pilates, and worked out at the gym and I did not need any other “work out” added into my routine. She bought a 10 class pass for me to her studio for Christmas which forced me to go since I did not want to waste her money. It was not long before I was calling her regularly asking when we were going to yoga again. What I did not realize was yoga is more than a work out. A yoga studio can be anything you need: A community, a support group, a place to make new friends, a place to sit quietly on your mat without anyone bothering you, and so much more.

When I moved to Sumter from Columbia, I was very nervous about leaving my yoga community there, much like a child on the first day at a new school. I was so overwhelmed by the love and acceptance I felt my first class at Southern Bliss. I was welcomed with so many smiling faces and a warm hug from the instructor. I knew immediately I had found my new community. In my time at Southern Bliss, I continue to be impressed with all of the teachers. Every one of the teachers has so much knowledge and there is a wide variety of classes to fit whatever mood I am in, whether that be a physically demanding class or one where I can relax on my mat most of class. I feel so blessed to have Southern Bliss in our community!
